AIRFREIGHT

Please read the information below as well as the requirements for transporting animals to make sure this service is right for you.

Animals have been transported by air since the early 1930's.

Whether it be a pet, an animal transported for pet relocation, zoological or agricultural purposes or for any other reason, the objective of REX is to ensure ALL animals are transported safely and humanely by air. REX Animal Regulations (RAR) is developed to ensure our employees, partners and subcontractors use all their means to meet this objective.

Air freight shipments must meet specific government security requirements before being transported on passenger or cargo aircraft. Contact REX for further details regarding the shipment of animals.

  • Advance arrangements are required

  • All animal shipments must comply with IATA Live Animal regulations:
    • The container must be suitable for the species being transported and appropriate for air transportation. Cargo will be inspected to ensure that it complies with packaging requirements.

    • The animal must be able to stand, turn and lie down in a natural manner (this rule will vary by species)

    • The container must be leak-proof, and absorbent bedding that is suitable for the species must be provided by the shipper.

    • Food and water containers suitable for the species being transported, must be provided inside and accessible from outside the container

  • Shipping kennels for cats and dogs are available for purchase at REX directly.

  • Shipper must comply with all local, state, federal and international regulations.

  • Shipper must obtain the appropriate documentation required for the species being transported. A Health Certificate issued by a licensed veterinarian not more than ten days prior to flight departure for the outbound and return trip, unless otherwise specified is a regular standard.

  • Weather conditions may affect the transportation of animals. Shippers will be required to confirm cargo reservations no more than 24 hours prior to flight departure.

  • For international transport, customers must contact the appropriate consulate office for the country of origin and destination. Certain countries prohibit the importation of animals as cargo, other countries require permits be obtained in advance of any shipment.

PREPARATION
Animal travel preparation tips will assist you in what you need to do prior to your animal travelling. You must first decide if you want to take your cat or dog with you.

- Familiarize your pet with the kennel, if possible have the kennel delivered 2 weeks prior to departure. Leave the door open and have him get use to the inside.
- The day of departure freeze the water container so there will be no spilage during the movement of the container.
- No toys or small objects floating in the container as this could be swollowed or cause harm to the animal.
- Do not feed the day of the travel. Provide plenty of water.
- Make sure to take the dog for a long walk a good hour before pick-up in order for him to do all his business.

SEDATION
In most cases cats and dogs should not be given sedatives or tranquilizers prior to flying. An animal’s natural ability to balance and maintain equilibrium is altered under sedation, which can be dangerous when the kennel is moved. Whether flying as a cabin or checked pet, animals are exposed to increased altitude pressures, which can create respiratory and cardiovascular problems for dogs and cats which are sedated or tranquilized. Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dogs and snub-nosed cats are especially affected.
